Undergraduate Studies - University of Virginia

"Educate and inform the whole mass of the people...they are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty." Thomas Jefferson
The University of Virginia was founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1819 in the twilight of his remarkable life. As an undergraduate student there, I was awed by the sense of history and tradition that surrounded me. As an educator I remain heavily influenced by the experience of living in the shadow of this American icon who contributed so much to this nation and its educational heritage.
Jefferson was the consummate renaissance man of his day, the epitome of the lifetime learner, and profoundly dedicated to the principle that education was the cornerstone that would support the foundation of the free democratic society he helped to create. The University of Virginia was a school of many firsts - arguably the model for the modern, national university. I addressed its historical significance in a Historical Analysis paper for my graduate studies class, EDAE 520, Adult Education.
